I've never aeen anything more than the preview of when John Witherspoon asked the Black Jesus for the winning lottery numbers, but when Jesus denied yet offered him LOVE. He cursed him, what does this sound like?? I'd say "Love don't pay the bills!" Our culture have become covetous and unappreciative of God's FREE gift. Christ! Yep, I linked to that interview with Sway (Sirius XM) in the post. I heard him say that he had lost 13 Million dollars. Unfortunately, I think he wasn't being realistic, when he made that first attempt... he wants to do a lot, when he has to start small. Ralph Lifshitz, the founder of Ralph Lauren, didn't start with a full line... he started with a few ties, and no money. Kanye has to move the ego, and start at the bottom, and I'm not sure he's willing to do that.

I agree Lily, and I noted that in the piece. I'm not saying that he can go to the levels that he wants to go to alone, I'm saying he can create SOMETHING, instead of trying to start at the level of Louis Vuitton or Ralph Lauren. But the original topic of this post is a good analysis. Pharrell was recently on the cover of Fast Company magazine and he uncovers all the different ventures he undertaking and his approach to. Kanye should borrow some point from Pharrell, such as making moves in silent and establishing a trust worthy team that will produce results.

To your point, there is an interview with Sway where Kanye claims he did sit down at the fashion industry table with his own money and failed. Apparently he lost a considerable amount of funds while pursuing this venture. Not to say just because you fail once you shouldn't try again, but I think he's just being strategic about using other people's money to help himself financially.

Except that Kanye doesn't really have the money. And by money I mean power. Actually, the two are interchangeable. So he can't do it himself. Not at the level he would like to.

You know what, I agree. If I had an opportunity to speak with Mr. West... my first suggestion to him would be to do it himself. I don't think that he needs the validation from "the industry" - which is what he's seeking. He's gifted. He has the vision. He has money. He has friends with money. So instead of seeking people who clearly have a distaste for him... he should be working to create his own. We have lost that "FUBU" concept in the grand scheme of things, and I think that he speaks to that with his "new slavery" ideals. As I briefly pointed out in the article though, it seems that he's been a bit contradictory in that area, as he wants to take meetings with the same labels that have people "enslaved." I think this is a part of a bigger conversation that we should all be taking part in, about creation, and about what we must do to improve our communities! Thanks for reading + your comment!

While I appreciate the significance of the points of this article, I think Kanye's rants allows us to consider a truth that WE, Afrakans, have not been able to champion. None of us need worry bout the "opportunity" to succeed (as a Jay Z or Pharrell Williams) in America, Europe or even Afraka. This article clearly highlights our capacity to do and play the game "properly" for optimal success, but Kanye's rants speaks to an underlined idea WE don't want to come to grips with. That idea is the concept of "FUBU". What do Afrakans produce, trade and consume and benefit from at various levels, simultaneously, without the "involvement" of europeans? Unfortunately, Kanye, like many of us and our entertainers, have been set up to desire the acceptance and validation of the same unworthy oppressive beasts that alienates us and under and devalue us in very clever and strategic ways that leaves us with little or no value of ourselves.

Asante for your contribution to the task of helping US get OUR minds right.

I agree with the 5 points (as much digging as it takes to get out of Kanye's words) made. Completely. But the contradictions and ego are just insanely thick. I wish I could agree with the notion that he's not crazy, but he is. Those contradictions and ego, despite the voice of reason coming from his right in the form of Charlemagne, are one of the keystones to lunacy. The disregard for listening to his own words coming out of his mouth and how they made no sense for the most part is (aside from being rather hilarious at times) dumfounding.

Pharell may be 'living the life' that Kanye wants but he hasn't had the impact on culture like Kanye has. I think the problem is Kanye wants to go from 0-60 in under 3 second instead of climbing the ladder. I think that Kanye feels that because he has climbed one ladder he shouldn't have to start at the bottom and climb another but what he doesn't realize is that although hip hop helps drive fashion, fashion was around long before hip hop.
